The brief for this design project was to create a facility dedicated
to the conservation of British butterflies and to act as a vistor centre.
The site is located in agricultural land adjacent to an ancient
The design uses the spiral - a form found in nature - to drive the
massing, internal and external circulation as well as the garden
The scheme provides an enclosed butterfy house, lecture theatre,
laboratory, exhibition space, restaurant, specialist garden
centre and is also set in its own landscaped grounds.
The centre's function is also to breed endangered species which
can then be released to enhance threatened colonies.
